This “page” provides a place to share information about varied running activities and relevant issues to the Juneau running community.Six Juneau athletes have made the 8-member Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska snowshoe squad heading to Yellowknife, NWT this March. Merry Ellefson will coach Hunter Brown, Leah Francis, Zack Bursell, Sidney Browning, Abby Query, and David Francis, and be joined by Heidi Doner of Palmer and Bart Grabman of Anchorage. We are rounding up traditional snowshoe equipment (Faber 9"x32" wood-and-sinew racing snowshoes, lengths of 1" flat cotton lampwick for bindings, and hide or leather moccasins or mukluks with no synthetic materials). If any SERR members have or know of any of these items for sale or loan--especially the moccasins or mukluks--they can contact me at akfrancis@mac.com. Girls on the Run-
This proposal has arisen from collaborative, multi-disciplinary
meetings between SEARCH steps to a Healthier SE Alaska, DELTA,
Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, the National Council on Alcoholism and
Drug Dependency and AWARE and with school interest/ funds we will land
the program at the appropriate school. Girls on the Run is an
experiential learning program for middle school age girls and combines
training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing,
uplifting workouts. The goals of the program include encouraging
positive emotional, social, and physical development in an effort to
reduce potential at-risk activities among its participants. The GOTR
curriculum supports healthy-decision making and addresses the
following issues: teen pregnancies, eating disorders, depression,
suicide and substance/alcohol abuse problems etc. After reviewing the
program we feel it promotes empowerment of young women. All
organizations involved will work closly with this program, help to
teach some classes etc...but we will need one wonderful coach. -- Current (semi-organized) running groups open to participation:
If you would like to add your group to this list, please contact Bob Marshall (bobm@gci.net) or the Webmaster using a link on the Contact SERR page). Out of (or new) to town and looking for a running partner? In addition to the individuals above, SERR officers can help you locate a running partner(s). Messages: We will post relevant messages to the running community at this location (number & content to be limited to protect the sanity of our webmaster). |
